- Tracy Chapman is groots performer – Door: Jan Vollaard, NRC Handelsblad, 02/20/2003
Haar roem ligt vooral besloten in dat ene moment in juni 1988, toen ze miljoenen televisiekijkers voor zich won met haar indringende optreden tijdens de rechtstreeks uitgezonden zeventigste verjaardag van Nelson Mandela. Tracy Chapman heeft een van de meest authentieke folkstemmen van de laatste twintig jaar: bewogen, melancholiek en diep, vooral als ze het kleine onrecht aansnijdt dat kansarme zwarte Amerikanen wordt aangedaan. Haar titelloze debuutalbum met haar bekendste nummer Fast car is een klassieker, die nog steeds een groot deel van haar live-repertoire dicteert.
Bij eerdere concerten was Tracy Chapman bijna meelijwekkend om haar podiumvrees, haar timide presentatie en de indruk die ze wekte dat ze beslist niet voor haar lol stond te zingen. Hoewel nog steeds geen wonder van extravert gedrag, is ze gegroeid in haar rol als performer. In een uitverkocht Vredenburg dat gisteren van begin tot eind aan haar voeten lag, veroorloofde ze zich zelfs enkele frivole aankondigingen en zong ze met zichtbaar genoegen haar intens persoonlijke, breekbare liedjes. Sinds die ene keer dat ze in Dublin het hele publiek mee kreeg, had ze niet meer van die mooie koorzang uit de zaal gehoord als hier, zei ze dankbaar.
Veel van Chapmans songs lenen zich voor eerbiedige `community singing’. Langzaam maar zeker heeft ze een indrukwekkend oeuvre opgebouwd, en het fanatiek meegezongen Talkin ’bout a revolution en Across the lines klonken als berichten uit een betere wereld. Haar band speelde dienend, met een drummer en gitarist die de kunst van het weglaten verstaan.
Nu Tracy Chapman op haar laatstverschenen album Let It Rain weer iets van de beklemmende eenvoud van haar debuut heeft hervonden, kregen de nieuwe nummers veel bijval. Niets kon echter tippen aan de euforie waarmee het uit duizenden herkenbare intro van Fast car werd ontvangen, haar nog altijd even mooie visioen van een ontsnapping aan armoede en
ellende. Juist omdat ze nog zoveel andere mooie liedjes heeft, was het jammer dat ze als toegift het afgezaagde Knocking on heaven’s door en Bob Marley’s Get up stand up koos. Het concert eindigde in een bijna jolige sfeer, en dat is het laatste waar haar prachtig sombere muziek om vraagt.

- Robert Suvaal, 02/21/03: The concert last night was simply wonderful. It felt like a party and it was great to see everybody enjoying herself/himself, including Tracy and her band. Fantastic atmosphere, great music, quiet songs that gave a lot of people goose-flesh, new songs and old songs, and a fine encore with songs by Bob Dylan (nice touch for me personally, having been to around 35 Dylan-shows over the last 20 years or so) and Bob Marley. A friend who was with us yesterday, and who was unfamiliar with Tracy´s music, told me she would go out and buy all Tracy´s CD´s immediately. BTW, Tracy was not just performing great, she was also very kind and smiling, and obviously having a good time herself. One of the best concerts I´ve been to, ever.

- YLIBRA, 02/22/03: Went to the concert on Thursday feb 20th 2003 in Utrecht. Absolutely fantastic concert, today, saturday still have our heads and hart full of Tracy. She’s a lovely person with a voice that warms you all over. “Please stay this way Tracy.” Thanks ever so much for a lovely concert.
- Harriët, 03/02/03: Hi, I was also in Utrecht on the 20th of February 2003. It was a dream of me to see her, but unfortunately there was no ticket anymore. On Thursday a few hours before the concert, I bought one ticket from someone who was not able to come. I still cannot believe that happened. Unbelievable. She is a great singer. And I hope to see her again in Holland.
