BROUGHT up in Cleveland Ohio and now living in San Francisco, Tracy Chapman is an awardwinning singer-songwriter. She’s just released her ninth studio album Our Bright Future.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE SONGS ON OUR BRIGHT FUTURE?
I’m proud of it all. I’m lucky to be surrounded by some wonderful people who are incredibly talented, and it turned out just as I hoped.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR SONGWRITING PROCESS…
I often write late at night or early in the morning, I’ll wake up with a really good idea and then start writing.
DON’T SLEEPLESS NIGHTS FRUSTRATE YOU?
No, I’m never frustrated. It’s always exciting to wake up with an idea.
WAS IT HARD TO DIRECT SO MANY MUSICIANS ON THE ALBUM?
It can be challenging, but that wasn’t the case with this record.
DO YOU HAVE ANY SUPERSTITIONS ABOUT RECORDING AN ALBUM?
No superstitions for recording, or anything else for that matter!
LOTS OF PEOPLE HAVE COVERED YOUR SONGS. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THAT?
It’s flattering people like my songs.
WHAT ARE YOUR MEMORIES OF MAKING CROSSROADS?
I was in Los Angeles and I’m pretty sure there was a major earthquake.
WHAT ABOUT MATTERS OF THE HEART?
Amazing musicians! We were in New York for a bit and I remember building up a very large coffee bill!
WHICH OTHER ARTISTS DO YOU RATE RIGHT NOW?
I like Feist, Nada Surf and the Radiohead album In Rainbows.
WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE FORTHCOMING UK TOUR?
I’m very excited about it.
