- Remko de Beer: Tonight I saw Tracy Chapman perform live in the Heineken Music Hall in Amsterdam.
Tracy was grrrrrrrrrrrrreat! Unfortunately I can’t say the same of the audience.. What’s up with all the mobile-photograph-taking these days??
When Tracy came on stage, I couldn’t even see her.. all I saw was mobile-screens which were held up above hundreds of heads..
And why do people have to call their entire list of family and friends, screaming in their cellphones ‘you gotta listen to this’,’guess where I am..’ and so on and so on, then turning the mic of the cellphone to the stage…
And what’s up with all the singing? When Tracy’s alone on stage to perform a beautiful intimate version of ‘ the promise” I’d have hoped people to be quiet.. but that was in vain.. An entire chorus burst into song.. dreadful.
But enough about my own issues and frustrations..

- Aurélie M., : The Heineken Music Hall is a very large venue, with no seats (at least for this show) so it immediately changes the feelings of a Tracy Chapman concert attended in those conditions. Some like the “wildness” of such conditions, but when I spent the day trying to get there, missing my train from Brussels, looking for the hotel in Amsterdam, getting used to a new culture and language, taking the subway to go to the very far from the city center venue, I was a bit tired. Noisy audience, smoking audience, drinking audience… I will keep a good memory of what happened on stage, only.
In the setlist I’ll remember the slow version of House Of The Rising Sun. The promise was again the most requested song (???). From Where You Live we got Before Easter (great!!) and again She’s Got Her Ticket and Telling Stories.
[singlepic=744,449,237,web20,center]As a cover encore song we got I Can’t Stand the Rain!!! I was really happy to hear it: first because I didn’t know she was performing this song (never read about it nor heard her version of it, it makes her 2nd cover from Tina Turner with Proud Mary). And also because I was really fed up with all the rain we had on this tour, from Edinburgh until Amsterdam, it didn’t stop raining, making tourism more difficult and offering less fun to trips. That night in Amsterdam it was raining too, was Tracy fed up too? The day after I had taken a day off in Amsterdam and it was a really beautiful sunny day, I don’t know if Tracy talked to gods of weather but I secretly thanked her for that! This said, the cover was really good :)

AMSTERDAM (ANP) – Een ingetogen Tracy Chapman speelde donderdagavond in een uitverkochte Heineken Music Hall in Amsterdam. De Amerikaanse zangeres staat bekend om haar politiek getinte nummers. Ze droeg die boodschap behalve in haar liedjes verder niet uit naar het publiek.
Ze bedankte de mensen wel voor hun aanwezigheid, meer zei ze nauwelijks. Chapman wordt in een keer wereldberoemd als ze in 1988 zingt op de 70e verjaardag van Nelson Mandela. Haar debuutalbum met daarop de megahit Fast Car gaat ook de hele wereld over en levert haar drie Grammy’s op. Later krijgt ze er nog een voor de hit Give me one reason.
Dit nummer was de toegift donderdagavond. Aan het begin liet de zangeres weten dat het een afwisselende avond zou worden. ,,Ik heb net een nieuw album uit, daarvan ga ik nummers spelen naast oude liedjes en jullie verzoeknummers.” Zo volgde de laatste single Change op de oude kraker Baby can I hold you tonight. Voor het protestnummer America van de laatste cd werden de trommels tevoorschijn gehaald en liet Chapman zelfs even haar gitaar los.
Where you live heet de nieuwe cd van Chapman. Het is het zevende studioalbum. De zangeres speelde inclusief toegift een kleine anderhalf uur. Het publiek bestond met name uit stoere vrouwen en stelletjes, waarvan de man niet altijd vrijwillig mee was. Sommige heren keken elkaar meewarig aan. ,,Moest jij ook mee?”

Donderdag 17 november geeft de Amerikaanse singer/songwriter Tracy Chapman in het kader van haar “Where you live tour” een concert in de Heineken Music Hall in Amsterdam.
Tracy Chapman is op slag wereldberoemd als ze op 11 juni 1988 optreedt tijdens het Nelson Mandela’s 70th Birthday Tribute Concert. Met alleen een gitaar maakt de voormalige Afrikaanse cultuur en antropologie studente enorme indruk, bij zowel de tienduizenden bezoekers in het Wembley Stadion als de miljoenen televisiekijkers.
Chapmans debuutalbum en de single “Fast Car” bereiken in snel tempo de eerste plaats en leveren haar drie Grammy Awards op. Een prijs die ze in 1997 nogmaals wint met het nummer “Give Me One Reason”. Andere bekende hits van Chapman zijn “Talkin’ about a revolution” en “Crossroads”. In september van dit jaar verschijnt “Where you live”, Chapmans zevende studio album en opvolger van “Let it rain” uit 2002. De eerste single van dit album is “Change”, met Red Hot Cilli Pepper Flea op bas.
